Good Morning,

It is hard to believe 2006 is ending and 2007 is fast approaching. We have been on our learning voyage for four months now, and I am encouraged and pleased the social and academic growth of Room 19’s Navigators. I am impressed by the tenacity and dedication demonstrated by many students as classroom and extracurricular goals are met and/or exceeded, and I am thankful for the support provided by both family and friends. You are the…Best!!!

Please enjoy a warm and loving holiday season, full of health, happiness, and prosperity.

Peace,

Kevin

Projects and Due Dates

$100.00 Words

  • For every $100.00 Word  you find in school or at home your group will earn valuable table/group points

  • Strategies like using a computer search engine, or finding someone else to do the work for you, suffer from two serious drawbacks. The point of the exercise is to give you a lot of practice adding up numbers and learning new words.  Having someone else give you the words, or even adding up the scores for your guesses, is a little like asking someone else to practice a skateboarding trick, write and memorize a speech, dribble a soccer ball, or take batting practice for you. It's not going to do you much good.

Some make it happen, some watch it happen, and some say, "What happened?"

Dear Parents,

STAR testing is completed, and I am very proud of how diligently our navigators worked on the reading, mathematics, and science tests.  We will take the Saugus School District’s grade five Mathematics computation and Language Arts writing tests on Monday and Tuesday mornings.  Remember, there are about three weeks of school left and few tests and projects must be completed, so please ensure your son/daughter continues working on his/her assigned tasks every night and remembers to turn in written assignments on their due dates.

Thanks,

Kevin

HOMEWORK and CLASSWORK for Room #19

Week of May 19, 2006

E-Mail - kmcgroary@saugus.k12.ca.us                         Phone: 297-8860

Dear Parents and Guardians:

This week, Room 19’s voyagers will take the following California Standards Tests (CSTs) on the following dates:

Mathematics

            Administration Dates

·         Mathematics Part One – Monday, May 15, at 8:30

·         Mathematics Part Two – Tuesday, May 16, at 8:30

Science

            Administration Dates

·         Science Part One – Wednesday, May 17, at 8:30

·         Science Part Two – Thursday, May 18, at 8:30

·

Make Up Dates

·         May 12 –May 19

I am so proud of how well prepared and focused the students were for last week’s tests. Standardized tests are academically rigorous, physically taxing, and mentally draining. Everyone worked to the best of his/her abilities, and I was very pleased that many students used all of the testing time to review and double check answers on both the test and answer documents. The tests are not timed, therefore finishing first and sitting quietly for an hour or so does not improve test scores. Several students continued working through recess in the library last week, and I am sure improved test scores will reflect this extra effort and dedication.

This week’s math tests include standards covered in grades one through five. Many questions are written in a word problem format, so it is important for everyone to take his/her time and to carefully read and think about the questions and answers. Scratch paper is available, and I have emphasized the importance of working out most of the test problems. Please tell your son/daughter to take as much time as he/she needs to complete all the problems and to double-check all work and answers.

Students will be encouraged to take home science books this week in order to review fourth and fifth grade concepts. Please encourage your son/daughter to eat and sleep well, bring snacks to school, and to wear comfortable clothes.

Contact the school office or meduring regular school hours if you have questions about the STAR Program or the testing schedule.

Cheers,

Kevin

Special Events

This Friday, I will provide pizza, salad, drinks, and cookies to all students who completed an additional 600 minutes of reading during the Magic Mountain Reading Program. Winning students will eat lunch in Room 19 on Friday.

Children know something that most people have forgotten.
Children possess a fascination with their everyday existence that is very special and would be very helpful to adults if they could learn to understand and respect it.
Keith Haring

Dear Parents and Students,
I hope everyone is having a safe and restful spring break. STAR testing begins shortly after we return to school, so it is important to read every day for at least one hour, to review science concepts taught during grades three through five, and to practice math facts regularly during this long break. The local teacher supply store adjacent to Trader Joe’s, Barnes and Noble, and Borders have test preparation books and materials available for families who are interested in spending some free time practicing together.
Please remind your navigator that when school begins, it is important to maintain consistent homework and test preparation habits. Please encourage your navigator to make choices that positively affect his/her academic performance.
Cheers,
Kevin
