Nearly all of the servers at the Saugus district office are now virtualized, and we deploy the vast majority of new servers at school sites as virtual machines. Server virtualization essentially allows a user to run multiple "virtual" servers on one piece of hardware.

This reduces power consumption and the number of physical machines required to run a data center. Fewer physical machines means more efficient use of resources and less waste, which are both great for the environment.

We prefer the open source Xen hypervisor for virtualizaition, but anyvirtualization engine would render the same benefits (albeit at a greater cost.)

Watch this space for tips and how-tos in the near future.
