For example, if you had a problem like: 4 + 7 x 2, would you get 22 or 18? To avoid confusion, we complete operations in the following order:

Parenthesis: any operations within parenthesis are done first.

Exponents: next, clear exponents.

Multiplication and Division: Work out any multiplication and/or division problems from left to right.

Addition and Subtraction: Finish up by working out any addition and/or subtraction operations working from left to right.

There are several ways to remember the above order. Many elementary teachers use the mnemonic: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. High school teachers tend to use the acronym: PEMDAS.

Either way, both methods can cause a little confusion as to how to deal with multiplication/division and addition/subtraction. Students tend to think that they do multiplication before division and addition before subtraction, but this is not true. In these cases, you work from left to right, clearing all the multiplication and division operations in the order they are encountered. Then you do the same for addition and subtraction.

For an explanation of how all this works: http://www.mathgoodies.com/Lessons/vol7/order_operations.html

For some conceptual practice try: http://www.funbrain.com/algebra/index.html

When you think you've got the hang of it, try the quiz.

----------

Order of operations is very useful when solving algebraic equations. You have to get the variable all by itself on one side of the equation so that you can see what it equals without any operations being done to it. For example, if you have X + 2 = 7, you can tell that when you add 2 to X, you get 7. But what if you wanted to know what X was equal to, before you added 2 to it? We can figure this out, by "undoing" what was done to it. In other words, we can subtract 2 from the left side, as long as we subtract it from the right side as well. When you subtract 2 from X + 2, you get X + 2 - 2, which just equals X. When you subtract 2 from 7 you get 5. So X = 5. If what is being done to X is more complicated than adding 2, you can undo it, by reversing the operations. If we have X x 2 + 2 = 8, we work in reverse order of operations to get X by itself. Since the last thing you'd do is add 2, we'll subtract it first. So X x 2 = 6. Now we'd undo multiplying by 2 by dividing by 2 instead. So X = 3.

Check here for a demonstration of how to solve one step equations.

If the idea of getting the variable by itself doesn't make sense, use this pan balance to see how it works.

For more practice using the concept of equality, check out these pan balance puzzles to hone your skills.

Feel free to stop by after school for clarification on what was taught, if your son or daughter is unclear on a concept.

[File does not exist]

Any help is appreciated

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Embed a calendar into the events page (start with SUSD cal possible?) Ok, foget the embedding. I'm just going to use the Zimbra calendar. Shared it with the grade lvl- that way we all can add dates, not just me. I also did a little comparison of 5th and 6th grade standards since I'm doing a split. Maybe there's an Open Source whiteboard that could be configured for logged in users only...Still not too much going on here. I think I'll just put my phone-podcasting service player in there. I could call with important info- like if I noticed a problem with homework or something.
