Tech Bytes :: Weblog :: Keybr and BBC Schools Dance Mat Typing

October 20, 2008

Here are two sites that support the learning of keyboarding skills. Keybr is a web 2.0 application that gives students a choice of three levels to choose from for a quick practice session. BBC Schools Dance Mat Typing resembles commercial products for teaching typing to young people, at the low-low price of free! It has several levels, instructs students in finger placement, and provides entertaining feedback during lessons to hold students' interests. Use the first for quick practice and the second for initital instruction. Use them both to have your students typing 50 wpm in no time.

  1. Thanks for this posting.  With the fourth grade SWATTEC program underway, I started using the bbc program during small groups with my students in an effort to get them going with their typing.  I like it because you can use the flash site or non flash version.  Kids can do this in addition to Tux Paint type programs.

  2. That's great- thanks for the comment. I created Techbytes with the SWATTEC program in mind. With a 1 computer/1 student ratio, you guys are really in a position to truly integrate technology into your curriculum.

  3. My principal came in to my classroom while some of the students were using the Dance Mat program.  She was so impressed with the program she sent out a school wide email letting others know about how great a program it truly is.  I rightfully gave credit to you. Now that the students can type basic skills using two hands, I tried the Keybr program but the students found it disorienting typing nonsense words.  Also, the program didn't register double letters.  Students had to space between each double letter so it will register.  Are there any other free sites you can recommend to get up the typing speed?  As we use the myaccess.com site I want the students to be able to type faster so they can write more.  Thanks.
