Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

Name of product: Dishwashers

Units: About 1.7 million in the United States

Manufacturer: Maytag Corp. of Newton, Iowa or Maytag Corp. of Benton Harbor, Mich.

Hazard: An electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element can pose a serious fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher heating element failures that resulted in fires and dishwasher damage, including one report of extensive kitchen damage from a fire. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recall includes Maytag®, Amana®, Jenn-Air®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand dishwashers with plastic tubs and certain serial numbers. The affected dishwashers were manufactured with black, bisque, white, silver and stainless steel front panels. The brand name is printed on the front of the dishwasher. The model and serial numbers are printed on a label located inside the plastic tub on a tag near the left side of the door opening. Serial numbers will start or end with one of the following sequences:

SERIAL number STARTING with

OR

SERIAL number ENDING with

NW39, NW40, NW41, NW42, NW43, NW44, NW45, NW46, NW47, NW48, NW49, NW50, NW51, NW52, NY01, NY02, NY03, NY04, NY05, NY06, NY07, NY08, NY09, NY10, NY11, NY12, NY13, NY14, NY15, NY16, NY17, NY18, NY19

JC, JE, JG, JJ, JL, JN, JP, JR, JT, JV, JX, LA, LC, LE, LG, LJ, LL, LN, LP, LR, LT, LV, LX, NA, NC, NE, NG, NJ, NL, NN, NP, NR

Sold at: Department and appliance stores and by homebuilders nationwide from February 2006 through April 2010 for between $250 and $900.

Manufactured in: United States

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it, inform all users of the dishwasher about the risk of fire and contact Maytag to verify if their dishwasher is included in the recall. The event is designed to test operators' skills in setting up and operating radio communication equipment in situations where electrical power is limited or unavailable. The idea is to simulate the conditions that can occur during a hurricane, tornado or other emergency, including man-made disasters. The event is sponsored by ARRL --the national association for Amateur Radio. The first Field Day actually took place in 1933. During Field Day, Ham Radio operators set up radio transmitting and receiving equipment in local parks, at shopping malls or even in backyards, and get on the air using generators, battery, wind or solar power to run their equipment. This type of exercise, along with the operators' dedication to public service, allows them to step in and help emergency officials and relief organizations when disaster strikes. Cell phones, the Internet and other communications technologies have yet to replace what Amateur Radio operators can do. We have a long track record of getting the message through when all other systems fail and the infrastructure has collapsed.

Welcome to each of our visitors. We hope you will find our Field Day informative and fun for your family. Please feel free to ask questions about the equipment you see.

Beginning at 11:00 AM Saturday June 26 and continuing for 24 hours, members of the Santa Clarita Amateur Radio Club will be operating radio station W6JW as part of Field Day 2010 with this year’s theme “EXPLORE the WORLD.” Please come and join SCARC members for a close-up look at ham radio in action. Field Day operations will be located at the Castaic Lake Water Agency above Central Park. With non-licensed visitors in mind, a “Get On The Air! (GOTA)” station will be available for you to talk with others across the country and the world!

The Castaic Lake Water Agency is located on 27234 Bouquet Canyon Road, north of Valencia Boulevard above Central Park. After entering the park, turn left and take the road up the hill, make a left turn at the top of the hill to reach the parking lot.

We hope to see you there!

Mike Siwula & Danny White, SCARC 2010 Field Day Co-chairmen.

Last Updated on Friday, 28 May 2010 11:26

This article is posted by Jan Clark, Safety & Risk Management at SUSD to help raise awareness in the field of Emergency/Disaster communications for our communities and schools. Jan is an amateur radio operator and member of the Santa Clarita Amateur Radio Club. Please direct any questions to Jan Clark at 661-294-5300, ext. 193.
